Jal Rakshak - an initiative towards Water Conservation
Water is one of the most critical natural resources, which each of us are dependent on in our daily lives. During summers, we are reminded of saving water in various ways which includes Water Aerators, Rain Water harvesting, Recharge Wells, STP etc.
Most important is to reduce the usage and wastage of Fresh Water.
By reducing fresh water usage - not only are we conserving water but also reducing the load on the Sewer lines and STP, bring down the frequent pumping of water to overhead tanks..
Water Aerators & Water flow restrictors are simple fixtures to the taps, bathroom showers that will help us restrict the flow of water in the taps and thus reducing the wastage of fresh water in the first place.
Aerators and restrictors are simple and are easy to install in the taps (both traditional and new taps having rings).
The activity started with a visit to the local govt school (about 300+ students) and noticed that newly put hand wash taps had high water flow. We immediately installed water aerators in all the taps. This would help in saving of around 10K liters of water per month.
Then we visited all the nearby govt schools and helped install water aerators or restrictors as required. We measured before and after installing the aerators. We noticed that in schools and colleges we could save substantial amount of water.
Pumping of water to the overhead tank has come down from twice a day to once a day in one of the government schools where aerators/restrictors were installed last week. It means wastage of water is reduced and the consumption of water has come down by 50%.
Listed below are the details of types of taps and installing the aerators in them.

Below pictures gives a glimpse of the initiative taken up in the nearby schools/college and other institutions.
Pilot Initiatives taken up:
Biome team conducted a session on 'water conservation' for the students of Sai Vidya Mandir at Bettahalsur. Team and students installed our 6 LPM restrictor for all the 8 plastic taps which brought down the flow rate from 15 LPM to 6 LPM. Students measured the flow rate using 1 litre bottle and stop watch on mobile. RWH was implemented in the school 4 years back.
Had visited a temple and noticed more water being used for washing hands/legs. Installed Water restrictor and help save 50% Water.
By installing the water aerators and flow restrictors in various institutions like apartments, villa communities, independent houses, educational institutions, hostels, PG's, hotels, hospitals, cinema halls, malls, corporate houses, marriage halls, bus stands, railway stations and many more -- we can Save thousands of liters of water.
ROI (Return on Investment) - One will meet the ROI within 2 to 3 months of installing Water Aerators and Restrictors.
We will continue this journey to save water and wish to take this project across Bangalore and every place where we can save water. We want communities, RWAs and other citizen groups to take it up in their areas and install water aerators / flow restrictors to save water.
We would like to spread Water Conservation initiative through social organizations like Rotary Bangalore, Inner Wheel, Lions Club and many more who can take it up though their clubs across Bangalore.
